Setting up an Alpha Shows Email Address

3 min read

If you are a staff member or member of the production team who has been assigned an Alpha Shows Email, here are the details of how to set this up.

Note that the newer version of Outlook is very picky and will likely not work. You’ll have to switch to Outlook classic and even then, you have to make sure the settings are just right.

Note: You cannot use an Alpha Shows email like a gmail address, where you can go to a website and check your email on the web. In order to use your Alpha Shows email, you’ll have to use a proper email client. Every phone has an email client – on iPhone, it’s just called Mail (Apple’s official email client). Same on macOS. If you’re using Windows, Windows also has a mail client, as does Android. You can also use a custom email client on any platform, Outlook would be a common one (but with caveats as mentioned above). If you’re on macOS, just use Mail, that’s the most reliable. If you’re on Windows or Android, use the built in ones, and avoid Outlook where possible.

Your email address for an Alpha Shows Email will be DIFFERENT to the username. And the server names for both incoming (IMAP) and outgoing (SMTP) will be different than what you may have seen in the past – it’s not mail.alphashows.com.au for instance.

Follow the directions and it will work.

Server name – for both IMAP and SMTP is hollywoodpacific.net

Username – will be given to you, but is often just your first name on its own: eg firstname

Password – will be set by the administrator and will be provided to you. Make sure you type it in exactly.

Email Address – [email protected]

Sometimes even if you put in everything correctly, you may get an error that it’s wrong, even though it’s not. That’s because other settings will impact your success and prevent logging in and your email client may throw the wrong error – like ‘username/password incorrect’ when that’s not the case.

So for other settings, make sure you set these as well:

DO NOT USE STARTTTS or whatever that is

You must have the normal / standards SSL turned on for both incoming and outgoing. It will not work without SSL on (this is for security). Like almost every server, our server is blocked from access for non-SSL connections.

The ports you MUST use are IMAP – 993 (and maybe 143). For SMTP use port 587 although 465 or 25 may also work depending on your ISP. Sometimes ISPs block certain ports for odd sending servers (ie. an SMTP server is a sending server) and Alpha’s servers definitely are non-standard in the sense that the email address does not match the server name.

Once you get all that setup, it should connect. If not, the only other thing we may have to do is reset your password (again) as it sometimes takes a few moments to propagate the password.
